Canadian officials have threatened to take Beijing to the World Trade Organization unless it backs off of its ban of imported pigs and pork products from the province of Alberta. Canada's Agriculture Minister told parliament that China is operating outside of sound science.
China imposed the ban on pigs and pork products from Alberta after it was confirmed that the H1N1 virus has spread from a human to a pig in the province. The human, a farm worker, had recently visited Mexico.
At the same time, Spain has said Russia's pork import ban is unjustified because eating pork did not spread the H1N1 virus. The two governments have been working on a diplomatic solution. Spanish Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Elena Espinosa said closing borders to pork can at no time be justified due to the flu.
