The national debt is close to the congressionally imposed limit of $14.294 trillion. As of March 25, the debt stood at $14.159 trillion. The only recourse Congress would have is to increase the national debt. Senator Jerry Moran, R-Kan., says he will not support an increase in the debt limit unless President Obama becomes more directly involved in efforts to overhaul federal finances. The Treasury has estimated that the debt limit will be reached between April 15 and May 31.
Moran says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has provided little or no leadership on what he believes to be the most important issue facing the nation - the national debt. Moran told Reid that with no indication of willingness to lead changing, he will vote 'no' on the request to raise the debt ceiling.
