NAIS Business Plan Comment Period Closes

USDA put forward a business plan for operation of the National Animal Identification System and opened it to comments from the public. According to USDA undersecretary of marketing and regulatory programs Bruce Knight, that comment period closed this week.

"We've been asking for public comment on are the goals correct," Knight says. "Can we really achieve 70% of the cow herd by 2009, which of these goals can we do. We'll be sifting through all of the comments on that and finalizing that business plan."

Knight says that the end of the comment period puts the timeframe for adoption of the NAIS business plan. Currently more than 30% of eligible livestock premises are registered under the National Animal Identification System.
