The NAFTA Free Trade Commission met yesterday in Washington. Attending the meeting were U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk; Mexico's Secretary of Economy Gerardo Ruiz Mateos; and Canada's Minister of International Trade the Honorable Stockwell Day. They met to celebrate the first 15 years of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement.
In a joint statement, the trio said, since NAFTA's entry into force rade and investment flows have increased, investment has grown, and the three nations' economies have become more competitive. They said benefits of expanding trade have flowed to businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers. From 1993 to 2008, trade among the NAFTA countries has more than tripled.
During the meeting the three nations said that climate change is one of the most daunting and pressing challenges and a solution requires ambitious and coordinated efforts by all nations. Given the integrated nature of the three economies, they underlined the importance of working together.
