Lock and Dam 25, located east of Winfield, Mo. on the Mississippi River, could be in line for a major upgrade. Having opened on May 18, 1939, Lock and Dam 25 is well beyond its 50-year design life and is currently undergoing major rehabilitation. The proposed upgrade would double the lock's length to 1200 feet, to accommodate modern barges.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold two public meetings Tuesday in Old Monroe, Mo., to give interested parties the opportunity to review and comment on a draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment of the impacts of the project. The National Corn Growers Association has been pushing for upgrades, saying they are needed so that inland waterways can be a safe and affordable way to move grain to market.
Congress authorized renovation and upgrading the lock and dam system under the Water Resources Development Act of 2007.
