More Time Available to Comment on E15

Expanding the ethanol standard gets more time for review.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is extending the comment period by another 60 days on a waiver application that would boost the amount of ethanol in a gallon of gasoline from 10% to 15%. The new fuel, often called E15, is being supported by a range of ethanol and commodity groups.

The original comment period was to end last week on May 21, but has been extended until July 20. The move to boost the level to 15%, or E15, was supported by Growth Energy and 54 ethanol manufacturers that submitted the E15 application waiver in March.

The rules of the Clean Air Act require that EPA respond within 270 days of receipt of the application, which is Dec. 1, 2009. The agency extension of the comment period won't impact that time frame. The agency says the comment period extension was granted to provide the public "additional time" to respond to the legal and technical issues raised in the application.
