More Pumping Stations Would Be Made Available Under Legislation

Growth Energy supports the bill.

Legislation introduced by Senators Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Richard Lugar, R-Ind., has received the endorsement of Growth Energy. The Consumer Fuels and Vehicles Choice Act is designed to give American drivers the choice of filling up on low-carbon fuel, like ethanol, by increasing the number of flex fuel vehicles and pumping stations available to consumers.

The act calls for 50% of all automobiles manufactured for sale in the United States to be flex fuel capable by 2011; 90% of all automobiles manufactured for U.S. sale to be flex fuel capable by 2013; more blender pumps at retail fueling stations capable of dispensing blends of fuel that contain anywhere from 0% ethanol to 85% ethanol; and authorizing grants of up to 50% of the cost for installing blender pumps and tanks and other infrastructure needed for selling these fuel blends.

Tom Buis, the CEO of Growth Energy, says, "If we want a low-carbon society, we need to give more American families a choice of low-carbon fuel at the filling stations. Ethanol is that low-carbon fuel, and it is here today."

Buis called the Harkin/Lugar bill forward-thinking legislation that will make the nation more energy independent, while creating jobs and substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
