Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) announced Friday that it will conduct a new herd buyout program - the second one this year - as farm-level milk prices have slid to their lowest level in 18 months, creating a need to decrease the number of cows in production and milk production and strengthen prices going into next year.
Citing "sky-high" energy and feed costs, as well as the credit crunch and problems producers are having accessing capita and the downward trend in milk prices, National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) chief executive officer and President Jerry Kozak said there is a need "to deal with (these issues) proactively." NMPF manages the CWT program.
CWT said all bids must be postmarked by Nov. 24th and, as in its first herd retirement this year, bids may include bred heifers for a flat fee of $1,225 per animal. Complete information is available at www.cwt.coop or by calling (888) 463-6298.
