Published: Feb 9, 2006

The U.S. ethanol industry got a little bigger again this week as Midwest Grain Processors in Lakota, Iowa announced their expansion is now complete. The new 45 million gallon per year expansion brings the total annual production capacity of the refinery to nearly 100 million gallons.

MGP's original plant, which was producing nearly 50 million gallons of ethanol each year, began operations in December 2002. The recent expansion was a 14-month project that doubled the plant's total output.

Work also is expected to be completed by Feb. 20 on construction of an additional one million bushels of grain storage to serve the expanded plant.

Currently, 95 ethanol refineries across the country have an annual capacity of more than 4.3 billion gallons, or more than 280,000 barrels per day. There are 33 ethanol refineries and eight expansions under construction with a combined annual capacity of more than 2 billion gallons.
