Drought has not been a factor so far in the Midwest and that has helped corn and soybean progress to make a charge over the past few weeks.
"Corn silking by August 3 still running behind schedule, but making up some progress; 83% silking, the five-year average is 91%," says USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey.
Soybeans are also running behind compared to the same time last year in crop progress, but like corn this summer has made up ground in delays caused by wet fields this spring. Both crops are seeing improved conditions.
"The corn now 66% good to excellent, the same as last week and now significantly better than this time last year at 56%," Rippey says. "Soybeans are also better than last year, 63% good to excellent on August 3; a week ago 62% and the previous year 56%."
