The local movement to stop the planting of biotech crops has gotten some attention in California with five counties passing such measures. However, in 14 states, lawmakers have passed bills that keep local governments from restricting biotech crop planting. Michigan may be the latest to pass a state-wide law that does the same.
A divided senate panel has approved legislation that would prevent local governments from banning planting of GMO crops. According to wire reports, the Republican-controlled panel voted three to two to send the bill to the state's full senate, despite objections from Democrats who claim such a measure "would jeopardize people's safety," according to one report.
States that have passed similar measures have been encouraged to do so not only by seed companies that market the technology, but also by a growing number of farmers who count on the crops.
