Michigan School Gets Grant for E15 Study

Department of Energy funds research at Kettering University on the 15% blend in older cars.

Published: Dec 28, 2010

Say what you will about the move toward E15 gasoline - and plenty has been said and written - it appears that the idea continues forward slowly. The U.S. Department of Energy is funding research by two Kettering University professors on how cars from the 1990s will react to the 15% blend.

The $125,000 grant is the second time the school has been tapped to research the fuel and whether it can harm older engines. While the government is looking for ways to boost renewable fuels, answering real-world use questions remains important.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's move in October to provide a conditional approval for the fuel was considered a solid start by the ethanol industry, but the American Petroleum Institute says more testing is needed. The Kettering study is one of several looking at the "old car" issue for the fuel.
