The government of Mexico has voluntarily suspended shipments of meat and poultry to the U.S. after the U.S. Department of Agriculture raised concerns about the quality of Mexican food inspections.
USDA's Food Safety & Inspection Service identified problems with Mexican sanitation controls and record-keeping during an annual audit that took place in Mexico earlier this year. About 2% of the U.S. beef and poultry supply comes from Mexico.
FSIS is still working to complete the audit report; it will be posted on the FSIS Web site within 60 days.
