Meat Trends Positive in USMEF Review

The U.S. Meat Export Federation reports that U.S. beef, pork and lamb exports are looking strong. This view followed USMEF's review of the latest statistics released by USDA. USMEF says beef export volume during October was up 12% when compared to the month of September. Pork exports continued their upward momentum posting the second-largest monthly volume this year, while pork muscle cut exports achieved their highest volume of 2009. Meanwhile, lamb exports benefited from strong demand growth in Mexico.
During October, U.S. beef exports totaled 82,627 metric tons valued at $274.7 million. While still below year-ago levels, October's beef exports show a 12% increase in volume and 5% in value over the prior month, and exceed the 2009 monthly average by 11% in volume and 7.5% in value.
Pork exports of 164,092 metric tons represented the second-largest monthly volume this year, while pork muscle cut exports achieved their highest volume of 2009 at 128,392 metric tons. Still, year-to-date exports are down 11% in volume and 13% in value.
U.S. lamb exports continued their strong pace, exceeding the 2008 volume by more than 50% and surpassing last year's value by 13%. The Caribbean remains the mainstay market in terms of value, but a near tripling of lamb export volume to Mexico has been a major contributor to this year's performance. January-October lamb plus lamb variety meat export value exceed $23.3 million and is on pace to match the all-time record of $27.8 million set in 2006.
