Maximizing Field Efficiency

Picking the right machine for the job will keep costs per acre down.

Producers are increasingly focused on maintaining profit margins in today's volatile markets by improving field efficiency. That means operating the right size of equipment at the right speed and efficiency to get the job done effectively, while keeping costs down. A spreadsheet developed by William Edwards at Iowa State University provides a simple but effective tool for estimating the field capacity of equipment to assess its eco-nomic effectiveness. The spreadsheet calculates the field capacity of the equipment when you input its size, speed of operation and overlap efficiency.®

We’re featuring the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 61-kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002, 2007 or Excel XP. You can download it using the link below.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a description of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial pro-gram as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
