Local food banks across the country are finding more food on their shelves because of a $100 million contribution by the Federal government through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The government has also contributed $50 million to help cover administrative costs.
These funds will help food banks such as the one in Richmond, California, where Lindsay Johnson, director of the local food bank program, says they have seen unheard of increases in the number of people coming to get food. Demand increased 40% between April and June, and the food that USDA was able to provide also increased.
ARRA funds are also increasing the benefits in the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Most families of four have received an additional $80 a month to purchase nutritious foods.
