Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling is scheduled to go into effect on Sept. 30, 2008 and many are wondering how it will impact consumers as well as retailers who must implement the rules. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Administrator Lloyd Day says there will be little noticeable impact on consumers.
"I don't think they're going to see a lot of changes actually," Day says. "It's really going to be most effected in the meat sector because a lot of the fruits and vegetables are already labeled product of Mexico or product of Chile so they are used to buying foreign goods already. They are looking for quality and looking for price."
Day says in the meat aisle the place that could see the most impact from COOL is beef.
