Legislation Adopts Energy Independence Proposals

The bipartisan SAFE Energy Act funds renewable energy sources while expanding domestic fossil fuel production.

Senators Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, introduced legislation last week with the aim of reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil through expansion of both renewable energy sources and domestic oil and natural gas production.

The Security and Fuel Efficiency, or SAFE, Energy Act of 2007 takes into account the recommendations of the Energy Security Leadership Council. The council is made up of business executives and retired military officers seeking to improve national security by lowering U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

The act's sponsors say it would reduce the energy intensity of the U.S. economy by 2030. In addition to supporting accelerated renewable energy development and environmentally-friendly expansion of oil and natural gas production in the U.S., the measure calls for stricter fuel economy standards.
