Spreadsheet makes sense out of crop insurance alternatives.

Crop insurance plays a much larger role in today's farm risk management plan as highly vola-tile markets threaten the operation's viability. Making sense of the crop insurance alternatives can be challenging, but the University of Illinois created a spreadsheet that calculates premiums, evaluates payments and provides historical data for making decisions for multiple crops grown in the Midwest and Southeast.

The spreadsheet allows you to customize your analysis to your state and county, playing what-if games with various alternatives, and printing the results for future reference.

We’re featuring the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 1,391 kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002, 2007 or Excel XP. You can download it by clicking using the link below.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a de-scription of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial pro-gram as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
