Keep Tabs on Feed Costs

Compare feed ingredients from a variety of sources.

Livestock producers know that a ration is only as good as the ingredients that go into it. Qual-ity varies considerably from one feed source to another, making it difficult to manage costs. How-ever, the University of Illinois developed a spreadsheet that allows you to calculate costs per pound of energy and crude protein on a dry matter basis, minus storage loss and transportation costs. The spreadsheet also calculates the relative value of different feed ingredients.

We’ve chosen the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 986-kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002 or Excel XP. You can download it by clicking on the link below.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a de-scription of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial pro-gram as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
