Better basis marketing is one of four key ways farmers can earn a better selling price. Mead, Neb., farmer Kerry Knuth captures a stronger basis by hauling corn and soybeans to the end user offering the best net price. By carrying monitoring transportation costs using a management accounting system, he knows down to the penny which bids are really the best. He also is ready to move when the market is, looking for basis pushes when end users are scrambling to obtain supplies.
Knuth discussed his methods with Senior Editor Bryce Knorr after speaking at the Farm Financial Standards Council meeting on July 21, 2010 in St. Louis.
