Kansas Latest Site of Soybean Rust Confirmation

The discovery is the farthest north and west the disease has ever been found.

Asian soybean rust was confirmed Friday in Montgomery County, Kansas. While most of the crop in Kansas has reached maturity and is not in danger from the disease, there is potential danger for late season and double-crop soybeans. However most late season and double-crop beans have reached the R5 growth stage and considering the level of disease in the sentinel plot, it's not expected that many fields will require spraying.

"Asian soybean rust's arrival in Kansas was expected," Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polansky says. "We must continue to be vigilant scouting for this disease in the coming years to ensure we detect it early enough for growers to take action to protect their crops."

Rust was also found the first time this year in Kentucky on Friday, however full season and double crop beans have reached the point where they are not in danger from the fungus. Although it is late in the season and the danger to crops decreases each day as they mature, rust is expected to continue spreading north and east.

Producers are advised to continue scouting fields for the disease. To track the disease and the levels of infestation throughout the U.S., click HERE.
