The Japanese press is reporting Japan may approve the end of a ban on U.S. beef Thursday.
The Japanese Food Safety Commission will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Thursday. At the meeting, the commission will review a formal report from inspectors who spent a month investigating the 35 beef processing plants requesting export rights, as well as feeding and slaughtering procedures nationwide.
Officials said Monday experts are still studying the full report. The inspectors found only minor problems at one or two plants, and Japan's Food Safety Commission and Health Ministry could approve shipments from all but those plants. They could be approved later on if the issues are resolved.
If the announcement is made Thursday, shipments could begin sometime in August.
