January Feedlot Numbers Higher than Expected

USDA's Cattle on Feed Report shows that placements in feedlots were greater than most analysts expected.

The USDA released the January Cattle on Feed Report last Friday. Expectations had been for cattle placed in feedlots to be higher, but the actual numbers were even higher than trade estimates. Dr. Ron Plain, an agricultural economist at the University of Missouri-Columbia, spoke with Farm Futures about the report and the current situation in the beef industry. This video provides his take on the surprises in the Cattle on Feed Report, the shrinking cow herd and the effects that will be felt this year in the retail market.
