Interstate Shipment of State Inspected Meat Supported by R-CALF

Group says new rules should not go beyond intent of Congress.

R-CALF USA says it strongly supports the interstate shipment of state-inspected meat. The 2008 Farm Bill authorized interstate shipment of state-inspected meat, and now the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service is seeking comments from the public during its rulemaking procedures.

"We believe such authorization will provide state-inspected meat packing and meat processing establishments an opportunity to expand their current operations by opening new markets in interstate commerce," R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard said. "The expansion of these state-inspected establishments potentially will enhance competition for cattle farmers and ranchers as they would have more marketing outlets to choose from when marketing their cattle."

R-CALF says the proposed rule should not impose upon the states requirements that go beyond what Congress deemed necessary to allow interstate shipment of state-inspected meat. And R-CALF wants to see protection to establishments operating under a Cooperative State Meat Inspection Program from enforcement actions caused by contaminations that originate in upstream slaughtering facilities.
