Interstate Sale of Raw Milk Debated

Milk board says raw milk proven transmitter of pathogens.
Compiled by staff
Published: Nov 2, 2011
The National Milk Producers Federation is asking the Food and Drug Administration to stand firm in the face of mounting pressures to further legalize the sale of raw milk direct to consumers. NMPF President and CEO Jerry Kozak is urging FDA to - not waver - as supporters have increased their criticism of current interstate sales restrictions. Kozak points out that - raw milk is a proven means of transmitting serious human pathogens, including E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella.

Raw milk supporters are urging FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to cease federal efforts to ban the trafficking in raw milk sales across state lines. Current FDA law prohibits the interstate sales of raw milk, although the majority of states allow some form of in-state sales and/or distribution of raw milk. Kozak says - we hope that Commissioner Hamburg looks at the evidence, and doesn’t just listen to the noise from those who would weaken public health protections.

Kozak says - it is particularly concerning that a key constituency in the raw milk movement includes mothers who wish to purchase the product to feed to their children. Kozak notes that more than three-quarters of foodborne illness outbreaks associated with raw milk or milk products involve a child. Pasteurization, when properly conducted, is the only way to ensure that milk is free from disease-causing microorganisms.

Dear "anonymous", I too would want to hide my identity if I left a comment as uninformed as yours. Milk does not come from cows in feedlots!! Feedlots are for beef cattle being fattened for butchering. Dairies are for milk cows. How do suggest a dairyman keep the cows from stepping in their own feces? I don't think potty training is an option. All of the dairies in my area treat their cows very well. Each cow is a very important and expensive asset to their livelihood. Please educate yourself!!! Foodborne illness make the NEWS regardless of the nature, E Coli, listeria, or any other. This kind of news is not good for producers and more importantly not good for the people who got sick. Perceived advantages of raw milk are just that, percieved. The industry/producers should stand up for a very good practice, pasterization. Carl Baumann

"more than three-quarters of foodborne illness outbreaks associated with raw milk or milk products involve a child" three-quarters of what? three-quarters of, like, 5, wouldn't be very impressive. if your cows are healthy in the first place, and not all infected from eating corn and soy and stomping around in their own feces at the feedlot, they shouldn't have any of those bacteria in the first place, so there's no need to Pastuerize. raw milk advocates don't want raw milk from the factory feedlot. they want raw milk from pastured, humanely raised cows.
