In the aftermath of typhoons that caused severe flooding in the Philippines U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced plans for more than $8 million in assistance under the Food for Progress Program. The allocations announced Monday are for roughly 7,000 metric tons of U.S. rice and 680 metric tons of non-fat dry milk produced in the U.S. USDA says the commodity donations will provide food to an estimated 438,000 people for 60 days.
Secretary Vilsack made the announcement in the Philippines. He's there to open a U.S. Trade Mission to further solidify direct commercial relations between U.S. and Philippine producers, processors, traders and investors.
