Increased Sales of DDGS to Southeast Asia

Egypt also is expanding imports of U.S. DDGS.

Citing USDA figures, the U.S. Grains Council reports sales of U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles are up globally this year, with the largest regional gain on a%age basis in Southeast Asia, where U.S. DDGS exports are up 27% year-over-year for the January-March period. That puts sales at nearly 300,000 metric tons for the quarter. The largest%age growth within the region is Malaysia with an increase of 278%.

"We are very active in promoting DDGS in Southeast Asia," said Adel Yusupov, the Council's regional director for Southeast Asia who is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. "We hold road shows and one-on-one meetings so feed millers and livestock and poultry producers can learn more about U.S. DDGS and other feed products. We've also brought trade teams to the United States to see how DDGS is produced and fed domestically."

The Council reports that the Southeast Asia Grain Transportation Conference in Singapore in late April resulted in more than $166 million in U.S. agriculture product sales. Purchases were made by companies in Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Philippines. A key objective of the Conference is to bring together prospective buyers and sellers in an environment that encourages networking and business discussions.

Meanwhile in the Middle East, Egyptian purchases of U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles reached 21,879 metric tons in the first quarter of calendar year 2011, a major increase over the 12,348 tons imported at this time a year ago. Dr. Hussein Soliman, U.S. Grains Council director in Egypt, believes imports could reach 350,000 metric tons by 2020.

This belief reflects the Council's success on several fronts, from introducing DDGS use to multiple animal sectors to encouraging more U.S. grain and co-products suppliers to offer DDGS to their Egyptian customers. As a result, DDGS imports have grown 42,901 metric tons in 2008, 79,415 tons in 2009, and 80,576 tons in 2010.

Egypt is currently the largest DDGS importing country in the Middle East with shipments both in containers and in bulk.
