Import Safety Group Releases Action Plan

Lots of recommendations offered in report.

The Interagency Working Group on Import Safety released its report Tuesday on how to increase the safety of imports into the U.S. The 86-page report has many recommendations for actions to be taken toward that goal.

"Our recommendation pertains to all parties involved in the import life-cycle, from production in the foreign country through U.S. ports-of entry to final consumption or use by American consumers," says Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, who chaired the Interagency Working Group.

The plan was developed by 12 federal agencies after information-gathering and discussions with stakeholders.

"This action plan reflects recommendations received from the public, as well as those generated as a result of the examination of our food safety system conducted at the President's request," says acting Ag Secretary Chuck Conner. "USDA looks forward to working with our federal partners and stakeholders to make the plan's recommendations a reality and in doing so we will bolster the safety of imported products."
