Laboratory tests confirmed Wednesday that domestic fowl that died over the weekend in Hungary carried the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza, Hungary's Ministry of Agriculture says.
European Union veterinary experts will discuss on Friday what safety measures to impose in response to the outbreak.
Alex Thiermann, who heads the World Animal Health Organisation standard-setting committee, told Reuters Tuesday that not enough is being done to curb avian influenza outbreaks.
"In some parts of the world, we have not done what should have been done, and that's to fight the disease in birds," he says. "The disease reporting and the rapidity of detection is better, but something we're not doing is to break the cycle from wildlife to domestic birds."
