How China Fits Into the National Export Initiative

A top USDA official says China's growing trade relationship with the US is one example of how a federal trade initiative could result in more jobs at home through exports.

According to USDA Undersecretary for Farm and Agricultural Services Jim Miller, the U.S. sees China as a key player in its efforts to expand exports and in turn expand economic opportunities at home.

"When we look at the growth that we've seen in the past and the possibility if we can get some of these market access issues resolved that could amount to an additional billion dollars of export trade to China," Miller said. "And for each billion dollars that we increase our exports, we're talking about somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000 jobs that are created in the United States, so it's important not just for the farmers and those that are engaged directly in the export trade; really it's important to the American economy as a whole."

Miller says negotiations on some of those ag trade issues are making slow but sure progress. Meetings will continue throughout the rest of the year, including the next U.S.-China joint committee meeting of commerce and trade in December.
