House Passes U.S.-Oman FTA

House Ways and Means Committee does "mock" markup of Peru FTA.
Compiled by staff
Published: Jul 21, 2006

Thursday the House narrowly passed the U.S.-Oman free trade agreement by a 221-205 vote, with several Republicans voting against the measure.

U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab praised the House vote, which follows the Senate's passage last month. However, parliamentary rules bounce the legislation back to the House for a vote before the President can sign it. The Constitution requires the Senate action follow the House.

Also Thursday, the House Ways and Means Committee held a "mock" markup of the U.S.-Peru free trade agreement. However, the debate was stalled by "competing rhetoric," Congress Daily reports.
