House Farm Bill Hearing Did Not Address Several Issues

Biodiesel tax credit, lifting of Cuban trade embargo not discussed in North Carolina.

Congressman Mike McIntyre, D-N.C., hosted a 2012 Farm Bill hearing in Fayetteville, N.C. Monday. He believes some items were missing from the hearing. One glaring omission he says was the hotly debated biofuel tax credit

And while the three pending free trade agreements with Korea, Panama and Colombia were mentioned briefly, the potential easing of the trade embargo with Cuba did not come up.

"That has been an issue that has gone back and forth because there are so many other things ancillary to that debate that go beyond just the agriculture issue," McIntyre said. "That's something that is probably going to be hotly debated as it goes forward and for those who are concerned about that I encourage you to go to www.house.gov and post any comments on the issue."

A markup on the Cuban trade embargo is scheduled for Wednesday. McIntyre says at the moment he doesn't have a good feel as to which way it will go.

"I think it will be close because of the fact that there have been so many other political and historical concerns associated with Cuba that go beyond the pale of just agricultural issues." McIntyre said. "It's going to be quite an interesting issue to deal with, but I'd say the jury is still out on that right now."
