House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in the Democrats' weekly radio address, said the party's still-in-the-works energy plan will consider opening portions of the Outer Continental Shelf for drilling, with appropriate safeguards, and without taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil. The plan also calls for the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, says Pelosi's new effort appears to be another flawed plan that will do little to lower gas prices. Observers say it is unlikely that an energy package can pass both houses of Congress this year. Democrats hope that a larger Democratic majority next year will put an energy bill over the top.
The energy issue is at or near the top of the issues being talked about and Democrats are feeling pressure from their constituents as they work for reelection.
