Homegrown Eco Ultra Oils Save Petro-dollars

Kansas firm is marketing API-rated synthetic blend motor oils across Great Plains.

Eco Ultra is the brand name of Universal Lubricant's new line of motor oils made from re-refined stocks of recycled oils collected from Wal-Mart stores and a number of other fleet and service outlets.

The Eco Ultra synthetic blends are available in 5W20, 5W30, 10W30 multi-viscosity weights rated by the American Petroleum Institute (API) for SM service. A 15W40 grade with an API CJ-4 label for diesels is also available. The motor oils and an Eco Ultra hydraulic fluid, as well as transmission fluids and industrial lubricants make up the "closed loop" process which keeps oil in circulation from use to refinery to reuse.

In all, Universal produces about 12 million gallons of Group II base oils per year.

Kansas-based Universal Lubricants, LLC, is marketing its own "closed loop" re-refined motor oils and hydraulic fluid in a new state-of-the-art refinery in Wichita.

That's about a third of the oil Universal collects, but petroleum engineers with Universal select the Group II fluids to match the needs of blenders for modern engines.

Universal completed its re-refinery in Wichita, Kansas in 2009 and has been supplying farm and fleet markets from the Rockies to the Mississippi since. Company officials say expanding beyond those borders is in the near future.

The conversion rate for "new" motor oils produced from used oil recycled for the purpose is about 1:2 with 25 gallons of "new" oil produced from a 55 gallon drum of used oil. The products are run through a fractionating process and water, impurities, heavy metals, gases and chemicals are stripped off for recycling. The Group II base oil coming from the process is as high or higher in quality than virgin Group II oils used by traditional refineries for making motor oils.
