Healthcare Repeal Effort Begins this Week

Democrats ask Speaker to consider consequences.

House Republicans say they will begin debate on a bill to repeal the health care overhaul law passed during the waning days of the 111th Congress. Debate will begin this Friday with a final vote scheduled next Wednesday, Jan. 12. If it passes, top Democrats in the Senate say they will block the repeal effort and if it passes both chambers of Congress, the President would likely veto the repeal.

In a Monday letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Senate Democrats urged him to consider the unintended consequences that the law's repeal would have on a number of popular consumer protections that help middle class Americans. A provision of the law closes a gap in the prescription drug program for Medicare beneficiaries, often referred to as the "doughnut hole."

Committee markup is expected Thursday. One House Democrat plans to offer a series of amendments at Thursday's markup designed to force Republicans to take up-or-down votes on some of the law's more popular provisions.
