Health Goals Set Forth by NFU

Johnson calling on Congress to act quickly on health care reform.

Published: Jan 7, 2010

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson has submitted a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., outlining four provisions for the health care bill which the organization believes require immediate attention.

The four points emphasized in the letter are a publicly-run health insurance option; an end to the exemption from antitrust laws currently granted to health insurance companies; the ability of self-employed individuals to deduct their health care costs as a business expense before calculating their self-employment tax; and financial help for low- and middle-income families, so that they can afford the insurance coverage they need.

"Quality, affordable health care coverage is a moral imperative—a human right—and we must act now," Johnson said. "NFU stands ready to work with Congress throughout the conference process to ensure passage of a final bill that begins to reform the current costly and inadequate health care system."

Why doesn't Farm Futures do a survey on how many farmers really agree with the Farmers Union. They don't represent farmers. They only still use the name because they know people still have respect for farmers. The key word in their name is Union, not Farmer. Healthcare is not a right, it's a privledge. Access to healthcare might be a right, and we all do have access. We do not have the right to healthcare insurance!
