Health Care Deal in Wake of August Recess is Possible

Grassley is cautiously optimistic, but wants analysis of town hall meetings from across country.

As the Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, is playing an important role in the effort to craft health care legislation in the Senate. Grassley doesn't believe it will be possible to work out a compromise with the Obama Administration on the issue, but says it is possible for the Senators to reach an agreement, although he confesses he's a little more cautious in saying that now.

"I've been out here listening to my constituents," Grassley said. "And if other members of Congress are hearing what I'm hearing, they're saying slow it down, do it a little bit more carefully, make sure you know what you're doing, and maybe do it even a little more incrementally."

While Grassley admits he has heard from some that are pushing government-run health care he says the slower approach is the main message he's taking from his town meetings. Now he wants to find out what other Iowa congressmen are hearing as well as what others across the country are hearing.

"We've got to get back and analyze the impact; it may cause us to change course," Grassley said. "I doubt if it will drop negotiations. It might even open the door for other Republicans that have plans to come into the discussion. So I just don't know where it is going to take us."
