Have MIG Will Travel

Portable wire welder from Hobart sports 180 amps and battery power.

Published: Oct 26, 2009

The folks at Hobart just freed farmers and ranchers who use wire welders from generators and extension cords with the new Trek 180 battery-powered MIG welder.

Capable of 180 amps and welding from 24 ga. to 1/4-inch mild steel in a single pass (on 115VAC), the Trek 180 weighs in at 52 lbs. and is powered with a pair of high performance batteries that can be fully recharged in 90 minutes from a 115VAC wall outlet, or to 80% charge in 20 minutes with wall current or an automotive power inverter. A full charge is worth 100 inches of continuous weld bead with a constant welding voltage -- regardless of battery charge. An electronic monitor shuts off the machine when battery potential drops to unsustainable levels. Maximum output on battery power is 120 amps.

A battery-pack MIG welder that delivers 180 amps of single-pass welding sums up the new Hobart Trek 180.

The Trek 180 takes 4-inch spools of .023 to .035 welding wire and operates equally well with flux-core wire or with true MIG management and shielding gas.

Hobart lists the Trek 180 at $1,400.
