Nebraska officials attribute increased registration of animal premises this year to the state's National Animal Identification System "Locate in 48" Web site. The site explains that retrieval of traceback data within a 48 hour window to contain the spread of animal disease is the main goal of the program.
Nebraska is the tenth state to reach the level of more than 50% of its animal premises being registered. Nationwide 429,600 sites have been registered under NAIS by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
"Premises registration is absolutely necessary to rapidly and reliably trace and eradicate animal disease," says Bruce Knight, under secretary of USDA's marketing and regulatory programs. "As the number of registered premises continues to grow, it emphasizes the growing support for animal identification, and I applaud these producers for making a choice that is crucial to the health and economic well-being of commercial livestock and poultry industries in the United States."
It's estimated that there are 1.4 million animal premises in the United State. To find out more about the NAIS program, click HERE.
