The World Trade Organization's Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures Committee met this week to deal with food safety and animal and plant health issues. Much discussion centered on H1N1 influenza-related trade restrictions. Canada, Mexico, Japan, the U.S., New Zealand, the European Union, Brazil, Paraguay, Australia and the Dominican Republic argued that import bans on live pigs and pork products are unjustified for dealing with H1N1. They praised countries that had based their responses on science.
