It's been one year since President Obama signed the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act. Since then approximately 2.6-million eligible children have been added and served by Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program. In an effort to include as many of the remaining unserved children as possible the Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture have formed the Secretary's Challenge: Connecting Kids to Coverage.
This five-year long campaign will challenge federal officials, governors, mayors, community organizations, tribal leaders and faith-based organizations to enroll the nearly five million uninsured children who are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP but are not enrolled. As part of the plan, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will work with state Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs, to encourage them to work with their state's Medicaid and CHIP programs to share data and identify uninsured children.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says they must make every effort to break down barriers so the American people can better access the federal benefits that they qualify for. According to Vilsack, this partnership will bring new cooperation between HHS and USDA so that families who qualify for food assistance can better access affordable health insurance for their children.
