Growing Support for Biodiesel

More than 100 signatures gathered on declaration.

Published: Jun 17, 2009

The Scientists for Biodiesel declaration, which was announced by co-chairs Dr. Rob Myers and Roger Beachy in February, now has more than 100 signatories declaring their support for biodiesel. National Biodiesel Board CEO Joe Jobe is hopeful this show of support from the scientific community will help people see through the misinformation that defenders of the status quo spread. These scientists recognize sustainable biodiesel's potential and the need for more investment in biodiesel research and development.

Vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri-Columbia Thomas Payne and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University Wendy Wintersteen are also signers of the declaration. Payne says he sees biodiesel playing a key role in the nation's future energy and environmental security. Wintersteen says that with over 100 signatories the declaration demonstrates the strength and breadth of support for biodiesel within the scientific community.

The declaration emphasizes biodiesel's sustainability and its benefits to reduce dependence on petroleum, address climate change and boost economies. It also calls for more investment into the scientific needs of biodiesel.
