Friday morning activists violently protested at Cargill's soybean port in Brazil. Police detained 16 the Greenpeace activists at Cargill's port that leads through rain forest to soybean fields in the central-western state of Mato Grosso.

A statement from Greenpeace states two women tried to occupy the roof and conveyor belts of the facility holding a banner reading, "Fora Cargill - Cargill Get Out." Other activists attempted to prevent soya from being unloaded from barges into the facility, while the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise blocked access to the Cargill dock.

The activists managed to stop operations at the port for three and a half hours.

Greenpeace says soy production is causing the destruction of thousands of acres of rain forest. Cargill's plant is an unpaved road through the Amazon; soy producers are lobbying the government to pave the road.
