Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, discussed trade with members of the Washington International Trade Association on Thursday. The Senator said it's essential to have a collaborative process. Without a bipartisan consensus that includes the White House he says it's not likely trade legislation will move through this Congress.
The Senator said despite the meaningful market opening opportunities at hand in the form of pending trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea there have just been false starts from the Administration and backsliding from Democrats in the House. He said the U.S. can't afford to wait in promoting our trade agenda. The country risks getting left behind.
Senator Grassley also told the Washington International Trade Association it's imperative that the nation maintains a leadership role in expanding global commerce and the rules of international trade. Otherwise the U.S. could be superseded and farmers, manufacturers, service providers and their workers will lose out to global competitors.
