Grain Storage has Value

Compute a fair rental value for dryer and bin space.

Bin and dryer use is at a premium as we head into the heart of this year’s wet harvest. Corn needs to be dried and there’s little place to store it in many areas of the Midwest. You priced your corn last spring above $4 to move it through the system, so you now have space available for your neighbor, who’s still waiting for a rally.

Iowa State University designed a simple spreadsheet for calculating a fair value for dryer usage and grain bin storage. Simply enter bin and dryer purchase price, useful life and associated costs, and the spreadsheet will provide total and per-bushel costs that are fair for each party.

We’ve chosen the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 39-kilobyte spread-sheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002 or Excel XP. You can download it by clicking on the link be-low.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a description of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial program as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
