Government Policy Crucial for Advanced Biofuels

Johnson says certainty is needed for next generation biofuels. (Video Report).
Jason Vance
Published: Nov 18, 2010

Last week at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention in Kansas City, Mo. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson discussed ethanol and biofuels with Farm Progress. He says that corn-based ethanol has been good for rural America, creating jobs and putting money into the economy, which resulted from government policy that supported it.

Johnson says that agriculture has largely filled the energy requested from corn-based ethanol. The next big leap will be the second and third generation fuels using other plant material to produce advanced biofuels.

"These are new industries, they are emerging industries that are not being commercialized in a significant way at this point," Johnson said. "These industries are going to need some certainty about public policy if they are going to survive."
