Goodlatte Wants Rollback of RFS

Virginia Congressman is preparing legislation that would suspend ethanol mandate.

House Ag Committee Vice Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., is preparing to introduce legislation that would rollback ethanol usage requirements of the Renewable Fuels Standard in times of low U.S. corn supplies.  According to Goodlatte, five of his ag committee colleagues have already agreed to co-sponsor the measure.

Goodlatte, who represents a leading turkey and poultry-producing district, said all end-users of corn need a level playing field.

"I'm not a fan of the government saying you have to produce a certain amount of a commodity for the purpose of creating renewable fuels, which is certainly a good thing to produce," Goodlatte said. "But not saying you got to produce a certain amount for the use of other people who have to compete in an open marketplace on the price, which is in part dictated by the government mandate. So livestock farmers are very much disadvantaged by that."

If Goodlatte had his way, the RFS mandate for corn ethanol would be eliminated altogether.

"At the very least I think we ought to have a situation where when the availability of stocks fall below a certain level the mandate should be suspended," Goodlatte said. "I'm working on legislation that would do just that and there's a broad coalition of agricultural interests that are working with me to accomplish that."

He did not comment on Capitol Hill chatter that his bill would reduce the ethanol mandate by 25% when the corn-stocks-to-use ratio is projected to be less than 7% and reduce it by 50% when the ratio would be 5% or less, saying that he wouldn't confirm rumors, just that he was working on legislation and would be introduced very soon.

Goodlatte is likely to have more to say about his proposal on Wednesday when he addresses the National Chicken Council annual meeting in Washington.

J. Snyder, it's unfortunate you are having trouble at your farm, but some in your industry are not having the same problem. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/04/us-tysonfoods-idUSTRE7132IY20110204

1 US Marine is injured or killed for every 50 fuel convoys that move through Afghanistan. The life of 1 US Marine is worth every hog and chicken farm in the world. So what if the price of bacon goes up? Have you seen how disgustingly fat the average American has become. Maybe the price of bacon and fried chicken needs to go up some!

Future generations will look back in disgust at us for turning feed into fuel to feed gas guzzlers. Several dozen small hog producers have gone out of business in my area due to high feed prices. I can barely afford to feed my poultry and hogs and must pass on my increase in feed prices to the consumer. One also needs to consider the environmental costs of growing corn on lands not suited to it. It makes me sick to see land planted to corn that was once in pasture and hayland resulting in increased erosion, more chemcial usage and increased water quality issues.

For those of us who raise poultry and cattle in the 6th District of Virginia, Goodlatte is bad news and has been for decades. He loves the ethanol subsidy and has voted for it for years even though it hurts the upper Shenandoah Valley farmers of his District. He is only now listening to his own constituents, and his approach is typical: piecemeal, compromising, and liberal. It's long time to get rid of this guy. After 10 terms, he has proven to be a big government loving RINO. And he voted to raise the debt limit this past summer, by over $2 Trillion. Bad latte.

This is pure paid lobbying from the chicken industry. Tyson can buy their chicken feed elsewhere - not from me!

Remember this Congressman in November - those of you that can vote in VA. Farmers should remember that the ethanol mandate is the only thing holding up corn prices in bad times and that even though this Administration is not supporting ethanol domestically, our exports or corn and ethanol fund the GDP and create jobs here in the US. Also just who are his five ag committee colleagues that agreed to co-sponsor? Find out and vote them out!!! Ethanol Forever!
