Glyphosate Resistant Sugarbeets Have New Opponent

Major campaign being launched to keep companies from using sugar from GMO crops.

Published: Mar 4, 2008

The Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility is rolling out a Web-based campaign targeting 60 of the nation's biggest food, beverage and restaurant companies to join them in opposing the planting of glyphosate-resistant sugarbeets. ICCR is focusing on companies such as McDonald's, Campbell's Soup, Kraft Foods, Kellogg, and Hershey's.

The ICCR makes the false claim that glyphosate is a toxic herbicide. Kevin Bradley, a professor of plant science at the University of Missouri says that is simply not true.

"Probably the safest herbicide that we have in our arsenal is glyphosate," Bradley says. "It acts at an enzyme that isn't found in mammals. It works on plants and bacteria, but not humans."

Bradley attributes that fact as one of the reasons that it is so popular and has taken hold in so many different crops and homeowner applications.

"It's extremely safe," Bradley says. "There is no factual basis for anybody to say that it is toxic."
