GHG Regulation Bill Passes House

Thursday afternoon, by a vote of 255 to 172, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Energy Tax Prevention Act, HR 910. Representative Collin Peterson, D-Minn., one of the bill's co-sponsors, says this bill hits the pause button on EPA's current efforts to regulate greenhouse gases. If Congress fails to act, the economic effects could be devastating. Peterson urged the Senate to quickly consider the legislation, although efforts to approve similar legislation in the form of an amendment to the small business bill failed Wednesday.
"America's farmers and ranchers are committed to preserving our natural resources for the next generation, but what we're seeing from EPA could potentially interfere with conservation efforts already underway," Peterson said. "EPA's regulations would not only make it harder for agriculture producers to meet increased demand but raise costs on all consumers."
National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says that NFU is disappointed that the House voted to limit EPA's authority to deal with significant air quality and climate change issues. Johnson believes what the U.S. truly needs is policy that provides clean, renewable energy and ways to address carbon that invest in rural America. According to the NFU President, this takes the country in the opposite direction of where it should be going.
